چکیده

[1] The atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio was measured using a continuous measurement system onboard a Gulfstream-II aircraft between the northern midlatitudes and the southern subtropics during the Biomass Burning and Lightning Experiment Phase A (BIBLE A) campaign in September–October 1998. The vertical distribution of CO2 over tropical regions was almost constant from the surface to an altitude of 13 km. CO2 enhancements from biomass burning and oceanic release were observed in the tropical boundary layer. Measurements in the upper troposphere indicate interhemispheric exchange was effectively suppressed between 2 N–7 N. Interhemispheric transport of air in the upper troposphere was suppressed effectively in this region. The CO2 mixing ratios in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres were almost constant, with an average value of about 365 parts per million (ppm) and 366 ppm, respectively. The correlation between the CO2 and NOy mixing ratios observed north of 7 N was apparently different from that obtained south of 2 N. This fact strongly supports the result that the north-south boundary in the upper troposphere during BIBLE Awas located around 2 N–7 N as the boundary is not necessary a permanent feature.

Abyssal Atlantic circulation during the Last Glacial Maximum: Constraining the ratio between transport and vertical mixing

[1] The ocean’s role in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide on glacial‐interglacial timescales remains an unresolved issue in paleoclimatology. Reduced mixing between deep water masses may have aided oceanic storage of atmospheric CO2 during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), but data supporting this idea have remained elusive. The dC of benthic foraminifera indicate the Atlantic Ocean was more ...

The imprint of surface fluxes and transport on variations in total column carbon dioxide

New observations of the vertically integrated CO2 mixing ratio, 〈CO2〉, from ground-based remote sensing show that variations in 〈CO2〉 are primarily determined by large-scale flux patterns. They therefore provide fundamentally different information than observations made within the boundary layer, which reflect the combined influence of large-scale and local fluxes. Observations of both 〈CO2〉 an...

Mariner 9 Ultraviolet Spectrometer Experiment: Vertical Distribution of Ozone on Mars

The vertical distribution of ozone in the atmosphere of Mars is computed from ultraviolet spectra obtained by the Mariner 9 spacecraft. In the Northern Hemisphere the ozone scale height is much smaller than the atmospheric scale height in midlatitudes and increases rapidly to a maximum farther north. At high latitudes (above 60 °) there is no significant difference between the scale heights of ...

Observed Signatures of the Barotropic and Baroclinic Annular Modes in Cloud Vertical Structure and Cloud Radiative Effects

The signatures of large-scale annular variability on the vertical structure of clouds and cloud radiative effects are examined in vertically resolved CloudSat and other satellite and reanalysis data products. The northern and southern ‘‘barotropic’’ annular modes (the NAM and SAM) have a complex vertical structure. Both are associated with a meridional dipole in clouds between subpolar and midd...

Regional carbon dioxide fluxes from mixing ratio data

We examine the atmospheric budget of CO2 at temperate continental sites in the Northern Hemisphere. On a monthly time scale both surface exchange and atmospheric transport are important in determining the rate of change of CO2 mixing ratio at these sites. Vertical differences between the atmospheric boundary layer and free troposphere over the continent are generally greater than large-scale zo...
